“From the first day I started, I was impressed by the breadth, scope, and quality of martial arts taught at Four Winds. Today, almost 25 years later, I am still impressed by the wide-ranging knowledge and experience of the instructors, and particularly the practical aspects incorporated by Mr. Sipin. Not only does Four Winds teach a variety of martial arts, but it blends them in a way that makes sense. From Eskrima to Tae Kwon Do, from boxing to grappling, from weapons to empty hands, it all fits together so students can learn not only individual techniques and skills, but also a more encompassing style of practical self-defense.”

Joel Dietl began training in martial arts more that 25 years ago, beginning with brief introductions to Judo and Karate during college, and Tae Kwon Do immediately after college. But it wasn’t until he joined Four Winds in 1987 that his martial arts training really began. He has tried to take advantage of everything Fours Winds has offered, beginning with Tae Kwon Do, then Doce Pares Eskrima, and more recently the Hardened Target Program. Along the way, Joel has achieved:

  • 3rd Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Fo
  • 1st Degree Black Belt in Doce Pares Eskrima
  • 1 World Eskrima Championship
  • 5 National Eskrima Championships
  • 5 Regional Eskrima Championships

As the Planning Manager for the City of Franklin, Joel supervises the Planning Department and is responsible for planning and zoning related matters of interest to the City. This includes review of all development proposals within the City, preparation of long-range planning reports to help guide the City, and administration of the City’s zoning ordinances.

Joel and his wife Jen married in 1998. They like to travel, and have been to Jamaica and Cancun, and closer to home, to such places as DisneyWorld, Sedona Arizona, Lake Tahoe, the Grand Canyon, and Napa Valley.

At the age of 50, Joel (who is not the oldest student at Four Winds) would also like to mention that Four Wind’s wide-ranging and practical curriculum is something that can be practiced by, and can provide a significant health benefit to, people of all ages.
